What Is EMDR?
EMDR therapy is a treatment developed by psychologist, Francine Shapiro, to help individuals move dysfunctional negative beliefs about self to more positive, functional beliefs. Dysfunctional beliefs usually seem irrational to the individual but they can’t help but think and experience them. Once the negative belief is identified during the therapy session, the therapist guides the use of bilateral stimulation (lights, sounds, or tapping) during processing to help the client develop new neuropathways and positive beliefs about the self and the situations.
